A jury in Los Angeles has convicted 30-year-old, Tory Lanez of felony, negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm. He might spend more than 20 years in prison.
Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, 27, a Grammy Award winner, claimed earlier that she had been shot in the feet after leaving a pool party.
As the verdict was announced, Lanez exhibited no reaction. He was placed on remand and will be sentenced on January 27. It was unclear at the time if he intended to appeal.
But moments later, after the jury was escorted out, his father, Sonstar Peterson, leapt up and shouted “This wicked system stands judged before God almighty!” as deputies closed in on him.
After the trial was over, one of Megan Thee Stallion's attorneys said to reporters "The jury made the appropriate decision. I'm glad Meg is getting justice ". The rapper missed hearing the ruling in court.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose true name is Megan Pete, testified during the trial that she was shot and wounded at the party on July 12, 2020, in the Hollywood Hills.
The rapper said that Lanez, whose true name is Daystar Peterson, got angry because she criticized his musical ability. She claimed that prior to him firing five shots at her, she had yelled to be released out of a luxurious vehicle. She said before the jury that the Canadian had instructed her to "dance" before firing.
She further stated that because he claimed to be on probation for a weapons offense, he had promised her $1 million (Ksh123,350,000) in exchange for her silence over the incident. She previously stated to have cut her feet on glass when speaking with police.
Lanez refuted the allegations regarding the argument with the other artist, and his attorney, George Mgdesyan, attempted to claim that the inquiry was flawed. Lanze had claimed that Kelsey Harris, a friend of Megan Thee Stallion,is the one that shot her, and the motive was "jealousy."
In her testimony, she also admitted to having had a "intimate" relationship with Lanez.
