Kenya mourns the tragic loss of Kelvin Kiptum, a renowned long-distance runner, whose life was cut short in a devastating road accident on Sunday, February 11. Alongside him, his Rwandese coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also perished when their vehicle tragically veered off the road.

Left behind is a grieving family, including his wife, Asenath Rotich, who recounted their last conversation with heavy hearts.

"We last spoke on Saturday evening. He used to come home on weekends. He asked me about Sunday church plans, and I told him there were none. He asked about the previous Sunday's plans, and I told him there was none," she shared with the media.

Rotich vividly remembered their discussion about church tithes. "He told me he would give me KSh 50,000 to take to the church because he could not come to give by himself as he was still training even on Sunday," she tearfully recounted from Elgeyo-Marakwet.

In addition to their immediate plans, Kiptum and Rotich had aspirations to build a home together, aiming to provide their family with a better life. "He (Kiptum) told me that by mid-2024, this year, we would be living in a new house," she sobbed.

The grief extends beyond immediate family members. Kiptum's father, Samson Cheruiyot, expressed profound sorrow during an interview, revealing that Kelvin was his only child. Cheruiyot also mentioned that Kelvin left behind children who depended directly on him, adding layers of heartache to the already devastating loss.
