To stop severe financial mismanagement and theft, a lobby group for the sugar business has committed to audit county, national, and corporate institutions even more closely. The Western Development Initiative Association (WEDIA) asserts that it will hold leaders and organizations accountable for failing to hold themselves forensically accountable for the money and resources they are in charge of. The lobby will concentrate on county governments and corporate institutions in the Western Kenya region, according to Joseph Barasa, the newly elected head of the lobby.

Phase one of the national initiative is where this is at. Whatever is theirs must remain theirs until the very last coin, whether it be used for private sector investments, welfare, education, or development programs. After many years as the organization's vice chairman, Barasa was elected chairman during the WEDIA annual general meeting held at a hotel in Nairobi. The gathering also saw the choice of Collins Kweyu of Standard Group as its organizing secretary, Aggrey Noah Okunyanyi as secretary general, Moses Andati as treasurer, and other office holders.

He expressed serious worry about the ongoing theft of funds discovered by the Auditor General. This relates to audits carried out at state enterprises, government agencies, and public institutions. "The same narrative is told over every year. Many common Kenyans have saved hundreds of billions of shillings of their lifetime salary, but they squander it in highly dubious ways," he remarked. Additionally, he warned sugar millers that they will be exposed for abusing farmers.

Baraza stated that WEDIA will collaborate with the necessary organizations to guarantee the recovery of farmers' assets. He observed instances where people had taken parts of the properties owned by Mumias Outgrowers Company (MOCO) and Busia Outgrowers Company (BOCO). The group is also pushing for a resurgence of the cotton sector in the area to assist farmers in diversifying their income-generating crops. WEDIA has made a name for itself as an advocate for the public good, particularly for small-scale farmers across the board, led by those in the struggling sugar industry, the small- to medium-sized business community, and the education sector, among others.
