As hundreds of people marched in the streets of Nairobi on Sunday to honor the lives lost in the anti-finance bill protests this week, President William Ruto has insisted that he is not to blame for these deaths.

"I have no blood on my hands," said Ruto during the interview with Kenyan TV.

Peaceful protests that turned violent last Tuesday, saw the police open fire to protesters who stormed the parliament.

Figures released by authorities put the death toll to 19. Referring to these deaths, Ruto has said that this should not have happened and that action will be taken against all those involved.

“There will be an investigation on how these 19 Kenyans died," he said.

He added: "Any killer cop who went beyond what is provided for in the law will have action taken against them."

Speaking during an interview with the media on Sunday at the state house, Ruto said that there will be no Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) officers on the streets during Tuesday's planned protests, as long as the demonstrations remain peaceful.

“First, the Kenya Defense Forces will not be on the street. They only come as a last result. If the demonstrations will be peaceful, I promise you, the police will be there to protect the demonstrators,” Ruto said.

Ruto also said that the police would be on the streets to ensure the safety of the protesters and guard against property damage and those who might want to disrupt the peaceful protests, adding that all must operate within the law.

“Police will also be there to make sure that those who come to burn offices and loot property are dealt with,” he said.
