Azimio La Umoja Leader Raila Odinga mourns World Marathon Record holder Kelvin Kiptum as a remarkable individual and a Kenyan athletics icon.
Kelvin Kiptum tragically lost his life in a road accident on Monday, February 12, while travelling along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road.
“Devastating news as we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Kelvin Kiptum, World Record holder and Kenyan athletics icon. Together with his coach, they tragically passed on in an accident tonight,” he said.
“My deepest condolences to his loved ones, friends, and the entire athletics fraternity. Our nation grieves the profound loss of a true hero.”
The heart-wrenching news was confirmed by traffic base commandant Dennis Muga, who revealed that the accident tragically claimed the lives of both Kelvin Kiptum and his Rwandese Coach Gervais Hakizimana while another passenger survived the accident and was rushed to hospital.
Kiptum and his coach were conveyed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) morgue, where their bodies were received for further examination and processing.
