In an interview with the media on Sunday at the state house, President William Ruto lauded MPs who voted in favor of the finance bill 2024 which was withdrawn after massive protests across the country, mentioning them as true heroes.

"MPs are the representatives of the people, they are not fools and are not mad, and I'm going to say that one day Kenya will know that the MPs who voted yes are the true heroes of Kenya," he said.

According to Ruto, the finance bill would have freed Kenya from debts, but after its withdrawal, the country will have to borrow close to a trillion.

"I have been working tirelessly to bring Kenya out of this debt trap, it is easy to say let us drop the bill, and I have accepted that decision because it has significant consequences," Ruto said.

"The funding gap we have with the finance bill going down is that instead of borrowing Sh600 billion, we are going to borrow close to a trillion," he added.

Responding to concerns about MPs distributing millions of shillings in church harambees, the president revealed that he has already spoken with UDA MPs, who are considering doing away with the harambees in churches.

"We are actually going to do away with harambees, because when a junior state officer donates Ksh20 million in a harambee, there is something fundamentally wrong. That is wrong," Ruto said.

The president also promised Kenyans that going forward, there will be changes in the government, including the elimination of unconstitutional offices and reduced spending by the government.

"Offices such as that of the First Lady have existed before, but from our spending. On CASs, the court declared themselves on that and tomorrow we are going to do away with that and other offices so that we can check we have respected that. We are not going to appoint a CS until our economy can sustain that," Ruto added.
