Kenya Railways informed travellers in Nairobi that the rail service would terminate on December 22, 2022, effective immediately. KR claims that the suspension occurred as a result of the ongoing December holiday season and poor passenger turnout. Part of the message said, "We desire to inform our clients that effective Thursday, December 22, the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service trains to and from Ruiru, Embakasi Village, Syokimau, and Lukenya in Kitengela will not run.
Kenya Railways Corporation, however, has guaranteed that regular service will continue on the connection trains that run between Nairobi Central Station and Nairobi SGR Terminus. The announcement stated that the travels had been halted and will resume in January 2023. The announcement further stated that "normal rail commuter services would resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2023."
Following the arrival of more wagons on the route for travelers in western Kenya, the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) published a new timetable for trains headed toward Kisumu on Wednesday, December 21. The modifications went into effect on December 21, with an estimated 12-hour travel time to Western Kenya. According to Kenya Railways, two trains would depart Nairobi for Lakeside City at 6:30, 8:00, and 9:30 p.m., respectively.
However, Kenya Railways also offered trains that would depart from the lakeside city for Nairobi at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. According to KR, first-class travelers would pay Ksh2,000 while those traveling in economy class would be charged Ksh600. Just a few days prior to the corporation's declaration, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had directed the addition of additional trains to the line because buses had run out of space.
