From a one-term Member of Parliament to the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya is one of the biggest political upgrades if not the biggest upgrade that has ever been recorded in the history of Kenya.
Rigathi Gachagua was one of the least people that were hinted to rise to the second highest seat in the land in the 2022 election. A lot of events surrounded the naming of President Ruto’s deputy and after a whole night of consultation, Rigathi emerged as the preferred running mate.
It’s still less than two years since the Kenya Kwanza government took over but Deputy President Rigathi has started facing the problems that his predecessor, current President, faced in his second term in 2017.
After a loud public disappearance, Riggy G was back on the headlines with his allies confirming the growing rumor that there could be tension between the President and Gachagua. Nyeri governor went on record saying they won’t allow their son to be humiliated.
Few months ago, the Deputy President was very vocal about how this government is a shareholding company and that courtesy of the 47% Mt. Kenya contributed, they are majority shareholders.
Right now, the once vocal truthful man can only choose to keep quiet and let his allies defend him. The charisma he had at the beginning of his term is slowly reducing as the reality of losing his position as President Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 polls begins to dawn on him.
Rigathi could soon be back to Mathira sooner than he thought but he won’t go back without a fight. The details of the deal he signed with President Ruto to become deputy are not in the public domain but it looks as if his time could be up as soon as it was starting.
Rigathi must have overrated the leverage he had and now I is almost expiring and the marriage of convenience between him and Ruto is approaching divorce stage.
The odds of him being retained were low but they have gone even lower with the current state of affairs. The Kikuyu leaders in UDA are split with some behind him and others, who are ambitious to replace him, still behind Ruto.
It still remains to be seen whether he will remain loyal to the President or he will follow in the steps of his boss by revolting against him.
