This celebration was created by the Christian community in the UK and parts of Europe, held every fourth Sunday of Lent. As the holiday grew in popularity, children began to present gifts and make their mothers feel special, but the popularity of the holiday began to fade as the merging of American Mother’s Day started to rise in the 1930s and 40s.

During the 1900s, the official Mother’s Day holiday arose as a result of the efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis the mother that started the movement but their reasons for celebrating were similar but not the same. In 1868, Jarvis organized "Mothers' Friendship Day," where mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote reconciliation.

However, following her death in 1905, her daughter Anna Jarvis decided to make Mother’s Day a National holiday in honor of the sacrifices made by mothers for their children. She protested for this holiday to be a national holiday so that it can be put on the calendar.

She found the holidays on the calendar very biased towards male achievements; eventually, she got the backup support and the funds needed to take it to Government and finally, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure stating that every second Sunday of May will be Mother’s Day.

Years passed and eventually, Mother’s Day was adopted in many countries around the world with different traditions and celebrations made for their mothers.
