Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announce plans to extend the Standard Guage Railway (SGR) line to Kisumu county and other towns in the coming months.
Speaking during an event on Thursday, December 8, Kipchumba Murkomen stated that the government was keen on reverting back to the initial SGR plan that was halted over a funding hitch.
He hinted that the ministry is looking to extend the line to Nakuru and Eldoret.
“We need to make sure it connects to a busy city so people can travel to Nakuru with SGR. Later we will connect it to Eldoret, Kisumu before it goes to Uganda.
“In the next few months, we should start connecting to Nakuru,” he stated.
In addition, Murkomen said that the move would be beneficial to revolutionize the transportation industry while also creating jobs for thousands of UKTN.
“The project will create more jobs. We don’t want the railway to end anywhere in Suswa,” said Murkomen.
Transport CS Murkomen made the statements hours after Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni announced that they had revived their SGR project between Kampala and Kenya’s Malaba border.
