The price drop is timely as the country is expected to import approximately 900,000 metric tonnes of duty-free maize from February to august 2023. The government had announced in December 2022 that would allow millers to import the commodity from the region before the onset of the main harvest projected to be from October 2023
The drop attributed to increase in production and supply by farmers as the government continues to make strides in increasing production from reverting from rain-based agriculture to irrigation-based agriculture. The rolling out of subsidized fertilizer and farm inputs already in all the countries to help increase food production.
