A creative Argentina defeated Croatia 3-0 on Tuesday December 14 to its second World Cup final in eight years with two goals from Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez. Messi converted a penalty and Alvarez netted two goals.

The two-time world champions, who had the support of the vast majority of spectators at the Lusail Stadium, put on their best performance of the competition to guarantee that they would face the winner of Wednesday's semifinal match between the defending champions France and Morocco in Sunday's final.

Leading scorers in the World Cup following Argentina and Croatia's first semi-final:

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe both scored five goals (Argentina)

Julian Alvarez and Olivier Giroud both scored four goals (Argentina)

Enner Valencia of Ecuador, Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands, Marcus Rashford of England, Alvaro Morata of Spain, Bukayo Saka of England, Richarlison of Brazil, and Goncalo Ramos of Spain all scored three goals (Portugal).
