24-year-old Sheila Wakesho Matasa has been arrested in Kiambaa, Kiambu county following a series of fraud cases she is alleged to have been involved in were reported in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kisumu and Mombasa counties for making several social media accounts that say she owns Airbnb’s in Mombasa.
Wakesho was arrested at a bank in Ruaka where she was seeking assistance after the bank had frozen her account claiming that there were multiple suspicious accounts.
The suspect who is accused of has been accused of extorting money from both locals and foreigners from different counties is said to have opened several social media platforms purporting to be owning several Airbnb’s in the coastal city of Mombasa.
She is said to have used her social media platforms with at least ten thousand followers to dupe hundreds of people who sought her services.
The 24-year-old is said to have convinced hundreds of unsuspecting victims to book rooms and pay via a M-pesa till number before vanishing and leaving the would-be customers stranded.
The now troubled 'businesswoman' is said to have been so careful that she has been using multiple sim cards registered with different names under different IDs that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations claimed were stolen.
However, the law finally caught up with Wakesho who obtained an unrevealed sum of money from a banker who would not let the money just go without a name. Upon raising suspicion, the banker tipped off detectives who swung into action and nabbed the now-said 'con woman'
Her arraignment files are being processed at various DCI stations in Kilimani, Kiambu, Kasarani and Thika, where the fraud cases were reported
