A hundred golfers are expected to participate in the ongoing annual Starehe charity golf at the Windsor Golf Hotel and country club. Both local and international professionals and amateurs are also expected to participate in the competition.
This is the fifth edition of the Starehe Golf day in Windsor after a break from the last edition that took place in 2015. The main aim of the event is to raise as much money as possible to help the girls’ school which primarily depends on charity donations.
The event has been raising approximately of a million shillings or slightly above; however, the ongoing event is expected to raise about one and a half to two million shillings.
Twenty-five girls are also expected at the event to play in a band and sing in a choir with the purpose of giving the girls an idea of what golfing is about.
The tournament has attracted sponsors from East Africa Reinsurance, Chandaria Foundation, Bimeda ltd Kenya, Movenpick, Sankara, Hemmingway’s, Taita Hills Salt Lick, Del Monte and Riz Charania.
The donation will go towards the sponsorship and also help in the maintenance of 800 girls from the school. In addition, winners and runners-up from different categories will be rewarded.
The school participates in 3 charity events every year, which include an annual golf event, annual charity walks in June and a dinner charity event in October.
‘There are very many big sponsors that come our way and in this case, our big sponsor is Windsor, which has actually given us the field for free and to host our sponsors. Each activity has different sponsors.’ said Jane Oita, the director of Starehe girls.
Wachira Mahihu from Liasin group who is one of the long-term sponsors said that Starehe Girls High School has a lot to offer to the country and also encourages support, especially on the scholarship program for the students.
The Starehe girls were founded in 2005 by innovative men and women who hope to see girls from humble backgrounds be empowered with good education to equip them in becoming future leaders of the country.
