President William Ruto and Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga have reached an agreement on how to end the political standoff that has resulted in the current anti-government demonstrations.
The agreement to form a ten-person panel comprised of individuals from various categories was made public by Raila in a statement that was distributed to newsrooms on Saturday, July 29.
“As a result, we and Kenya Kwanza have decided to form a committee of ten, made up of five representatives from Azimio La Umoja and five from Kenya Kwanza.
Two members from each side are among the four members who are not lawmakers. The National Assembly's Majority and Minority Leaders,” Read the statement in part.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who met with both parties multiple times, helped them achieve an agreement.
Azimio la Umoja added that the information was released following discussions with Kenya Kwanza leadership on the state of the nation.
The leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party also promised that more information about the plan would be released as soon as possible.
The coalition reaffirmed its desire for a democratic and peaceful solution to problems plaguing the nation, such as the cost of living and electoral fairness.
Raila also condemned and apologized on behalf of the coalition for the violence that was inflicted against demonstrators and ultimately resulted in fatalities, major injuries, and property damage.
"We reaffirm our dedication to upholding the Rule of Law and the Constitution. For the good of all of our people, we're resolved to settle our disputes amicably,” Raila said.
Separately, in Mombasa, Ruto said he is prepared to sit down and speak with his opponents, particularly about matters that will unite the nation in peace and harmony.
