The United Democratic Alliance grassroots elections in Nairobi which were conducted on Friday the 26th of April, have caused a lot of jitters inside the party. The Nairobi UDA chairmanship pitted Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi North Member of Parliament.

The results of Friday have not yet been declared publicly by the party but the ramifications of the results could play a big role in shaping Nairobi city politics.

There has been overwhelming support for James Gakuya who is currently serving his third term, by some of the big names in the party including Dagoretti South Mp John Kiarie and 2022 UDA party Nairobi Women Representative aspirant Millicent Omanga. It has also been rumored that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is throwing his weight behind Honorable Gakuya.

Sakaja has come under fire for the poor governance in Nairobi especially with the floods being experienced in the country. A section of MPs led by Dagoretti South parliamentarian John Kiarie and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru held a press conference a few days ago criticizing the governor.

With things falling apart for the Nairobi governor, losing the chairmanship will be a big blow to his ambition of seeking re-election as Nairobi City county boss with the UDA party ticket.

Sakaja might face difficulties trying to become the first governor to successfully be re-elected in Nairobi. As we await the declaration of the results by the party, it is crystal clear that Sakaja has made a lot of enemies among the political class already due to his growing unpopularity among Nairobians.

Losing the chairmanship position could mean he faces a toll order in his quest to become the first Nairobi governor to be re-elected for a second term.
