What you should know about Junior Secondary School Transition

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Monday,16 January 2023, presided over the release of form one placement results for the 2022 KCPE Examination candidates.

Addressing the press, CS Machogu confirmed that all 1,230,588 candidates who sat the national examinations were correctly placed in various secondary schools.

According to Machogu, the government is now committed to ensuring that each and every learner progresses from primary school to secondary school.

He announced that the government has set Ksh 9.6 billion to facilitate learning activities in public junior secondary schools.

“His Excellency President William Ruto has directed that the National Treasury set aside Sh15,000 per learner as capitation to facilitate free learning in all public schools,” Machogu stated.

“In total, the Government will spend Sh9.6 Billion for the learners in Junior 6 Secondary Schools this calendar year,” he added.

He also went ahead to announce that learners who were joining Junior School this month will not be required to pay any school fees.

“It, therefore, means that no school should charge any fees for Grade 7 learners unless such schools have boarding wings,” Machogu said.

The Teachers Service Commission is also in the process to recruit 30,000 teachers, majority of whom will be attending to learners joining the Junior Secondary schools.

The Ministry clarified on the school uniform dilemma raised by parents and teachers of grade 7 students.

CS Machogu said that Grade 7 pupils transitioning to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) will be required to wear a different color or type of uniform that will differentiate them from primary school pupils.

All schools are also required to admit learners through the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

“Schools to admit learners through the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS); principals to file returns on the status of reporting to schools,” CS Machogu.

CS Machogu clarified that the government and ministry will not abolish boarding schools however it will expand and provide better facilities for day schools. 

“As a ministry and government, we have not said that we are abolishing boarding schools. As we move forward we have to expand and provide better facilities for day schools,” he said.
