On Tuesday morning, President William Ruto chaired his first cabinet meeting at State House, Nairobi.

The meeting, which was attended by all cabinet secretaries from former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government, was a usual cabinet meeting for the president to get a briefing on various dockets.

The meetings left many Kenyans in surprise after seeing key cabinet secretaries who strongly opposed Ruto’s presidential candidature in attendance.

Some of the key leaders who attended the meeting include; Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, Attorney General Kihara Kariuki) and Head of public service Joseph Kinyua.

Notable cabinet secretaries at the meeting were Dr. Fred Matiang’I (Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government), Peter Munya ( Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture of Kenya), Eugene Wamalwa (Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Defence) and Joe Mucheru (ICT).

Other cabinet secretaries who were in attendance include; James Macharia (Transport), Farida Karoney (Lands), Ukur Yattani (Treasury), Betty Maina (Trade), Simon Chelugui (Labour), Mutahi Kagwe (Health), Margaret Kobia ( Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs), Najib Balala (Tourism), Keriako Tobiko (Environment), Amina Mohammed (Sports), Rachel Omamo (Foreign Affairs), Monica Juma (Energy).

Many Kenyans thought these cabinet secretaries will not accept to meet president William Ruto, a turnaround that has since sparked a heated debate on social media.

Nandi Senator and Ruto’s ally Samson Cherargei also took to social media to express his surprise after seeing some of the leaders attend a meeting with a leader they strongly campaigned against.

“H.E Ruto is chairing his first cabinet meeting interestingly Matiangi, Munya, Tobiko, Mucheru, Wamalwa, Amina & Balala are attending. The man they campaign against is their boss lazima inauma sana!” Said Cherargei.

Speaking via his official Twitter handle, Cherargei added that at the end of the meeting, they will pray for the seven cabinet secretaries.

Last week, Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua said Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries who former President Uhuru appointed would remain in office until his successor names their replacements.

“The transition from the Fourth Administration to the Fifth Administration continues apace and shall only conclude when appointments to the Cabinet and the senior ranks of the Executive are concluded,” Kinyua stated.
