Kirinyaga bar owners association, have refuted deputy president Rigathi Gachagua's recent call to have operating licenses issued to a single bar in every town.

Led by chairman Kirinyaga bar owners, Anthony Mucheke, the bar owners have decried the deputy president’s decision saying they will lose their source of income.

"As kirinyaga bar owners, we will not agree to his demand and neither will we close our businesses. it's absurd to have people travel from one part of the county to another  "said Mucheke

Mucheka added saying that most bars have not yet recovered from the covid 19 impact and such a decision will take a toll on their source of living.

"We don't have an issue with enforcing a crackdown on illicit brews and we are ready to join the government in reigning in illicit alcohol sellers but the products we sell are legit and have been verified by the kenya bureau of standards," he said.

DP Gachagua on Thursday while in Murang’a county called on county bosses to regulate the issuance of licenses for bars and pubs, saying consumption of illicit liquor has reached worrying levels and threatens to clear generation of the youth particularly in central Kenya. Gachagua told national government administrators including sub chiefs, chiefs, sub-county and county commissioners and regional commissioners to join hands in containing the illicit liquor.
