Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Coalition has come out to stand in solidarity with Maina Njenga’s family following his alleged abduction. The Former Mungiki leader was allegedly abducted on Saturday in Kiambu.
The opposition coalition has come out to allege that the alleged abduction is one of the ways the government is using to intimidate the opposition leaders.
“Maina’s abduction is also part of the ongoing targeting and intimidation of opposition leaders by Kenya Kwanza. It is a deliberate attempt to distract Kenyans from the pressing issues such as the rising cost of fuel and food.” The statement reads in part.
The Raila-led coalition has also condemned strongly the act calling it a gang-style abduction.
“We are here to join and stand in solidarity with Mr. Maina Njenga, who was abducted yesterday and whose whereabouts remain unknown. We strongly condemn the gang-style abduction of Mr. Njenga and his continued persecution without any charges being preferred against him. His family is being kept in the dark regarding his whereabouts.” Read the statement.
They further alleged that the act was carried out by SSU which had been disbanded by President William Ruto late last year.
“The abductors were driving Subarus, armed, and hooded. It is highly likely that they were part of the Special Support Unit, known for terrorizing Kenyans during the anti-tax protests. The SSU is evidently still active and determined to intimidate and harm Kenyans.” Read the statement
Maina Njenga is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow for a pre-trial, Azimio says this alleged kidnapping is clearly an attempt to interfere with that scheduled pre-trial.
The opposition has gone ahead to demand his immediate release saying they will hold the IG of police accountable.
“We vehemently condemn the abduction and continued persecution of Mr. Maina and his family. We demand his immediate and unconditional release or his production in court. We want to make it clear that we will hold the Inspector General of Police fully accountable for Mr. Maina's life should anything happen to him.” Reads the statement.
