The Ruto-led administration is currently dealing with a new obstacle that calls into question their campaign promises.
Speaking at a church service in Mathira Constituency on Sunday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua acknowledged the difficulty the government is having in paying the civil servants.
“It is true we are having challenges in paying salaries, giving money to Governors. Because the handshake gov’t ripped this country, they borrowed money left right and centre,” said DP Gachagua.
DP Gachagua has also made it clear that the government is in a challenging situation as it works hard to repay all loans from what he referred to as the ‘handshake’ regime.
“We are in a difficult situation; we are not the ones who borrowed the money but have to pay because it is owed by Kenya. William Ruto cannot run away from those debts even though he did not incur them,” he stated.
The second head of state confirmed that they will be able to pay salaries this week after adding that money collected over the previous two weeks had been used to settle debts.
“What we collected the last two weeks was sufficient to pay the loans. What we are collecting this week will pay salaries and other requirements,” he added.
This comes after Opiyo Wandayi, the minority leader in the national assembly, voiced concerns about the situation, claiming that the country might be imploding as a result of the unexplainable delays in the payment of salaries to MPs and other civil servants.
