The United States Government through its Ambassador Meg Whitman has commended President Ruto and the opposition leader Raila Odinga for their move to call for a cease-fire that severely hurt the nation’s economy and alternatively settled for a political dialogue.

In a statement issued by Meg Whitman, stated that the U.S. government has welcomed the decision made by the two leaders to establish a bipartisan agreement, as it greatly benefits Kenyans at large.

“We welcome the agreement by President Ruto and former PM Raila Odinga to establish a bipartisan process to find solutions that benefit all Kenyans,” Meg Whitman.

“We commend both leaders for their commitment to peaceful dialogue, and call on all parties to support this process,” she added.

This comes after President William Ruto pleaded with Azimio leader Raila Odinga to call off the mass demonstrations.

William Ruto stated that he has carefully listened to the opposition's concerns and is open to discussions based on the law and the constitution.

“I have carefully listened to the issues raised by my friend Raila Odinga. In times like these, it is not about who is right or who is wrong. Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak but it is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” said Ruto.

“My door still remains open for honest, objective and sincere deliberations based on the rule of law and the constitution,” he added.

The head of state however repeatedly indicated that he is not open to a ‘handshake’ on the grounds that it will compromise with the government’s accountability and oversight.

Later on that day, the opposition called off Monday’s demonstrations, saying they welcome Mr Ruto’s suggestion to hold a bipartisan process to resolve the halting the process of appointing new commissioners.
