The tradition of revealing top students after announcing results has been cut off this year by the new Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu. Speaking at Mtihani House, Machogu bucked down the tradition when he did not name the country's top students. However, he went ahead and announced that the top candidate in the 2022 class scored 431 marks, an improvement from the 428 scored in the previous national exam.
"In the overall performance of the 2022 KCPE examination, the overall performance improved compared to that of 2021. The mark of the highest candidate rose four points from 428 to 431 in 2022.” Machogu said.
The Cabinet Secretary did not mention the name of the top student, nor their primary school as it has been traditionally. The 2022 KCPE top performers in the first position had a tie. The first position was taken by Fwaro Makokha Robinson and Otieno Lewis Omondi Glen, who scored 431 marks.
As it is the ritual of former Cabinet Secretaries like Magoha who named the top students, and their respective schools. Where Bruce Magata Mackenzie of Gilgil Hills Academy emerged top with 428 marks, this time around things was a little bit different as none of that was mentioned other than the marks.
On a normal day, when the KCPE results are released, candidates are usually filled with anxiety and tension hoping that their names will be called out by the CS as among top performers.
