Three police constables, Victor Khisa, John Odhiambo and Timothy Otieno were on Tuesday arrested after demanding bribe from two university students, Alvin Kyalo, a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Robert Mutugi from Daystar University with alleged claims of possessing bhang.
The three police constables demanded a 100K bribe from each student.
According to report from Lang’ata police station, both Kyalo and Mutugi were having lunch at Magharibi place near T-Mall when they were arrested by the officers who were dressed as civilians over alleged possession of bhang’.
The two were placed in two different vehicles where Kyalo was bundled into a white Toyota Vitz while Mutugi was taken into a silver Toyota Premio which had three occupants - one dressed in full jungle uniform and two others in civilian clothes.
The report stated that the two were held in the car for more than four hours.
They were forced to call their parents to demand money in order to secure their release or be taken into custody.
Mutugi was released after he was forced to withdraw ksh 10,000 he had received from his father and another ksh 10,000 he had with him.
Kyalo was then forced to contact his mother, who is said to work in the city center. When she arrived, the officers allegedly demanded Ksh.100,000 in order to secure her son's release.
According to the police report, she refused to get into a police vehicle where she was directed, but instead requested permission to withdraw money from the mall.
She spotted officers from Nyayo police post who were on patrol at the mall and reported the incident, prompting police officers to take action. The officers rushed to where the two motor vehicles were parked and managed to arrest two suspects who were in the Vitz and rescued Kyalo.
Four other occupants who were in the Premio managed to escape upon seeing the police.
During the operation, a KDF smoke jacket, a reflector jacket, and a radio set gadget were recovered.
According to the police report, one student complained of having been assaulted by the suspects.
After their arrests, it was discovered that the officers are attached to the K9 unit in Lang'ata.
They were detained at Langata police station.
Police officers are conducting a manhunt for the suspects who fled.
