Thousands of angry villagers in Nandi  chased away local chiefs and police officers, accusing them of laxity in discharging their duties following an incident where a gold mine collapsed on Monday killing three men who were working on site. Eight others were rescued from the mine that caved in after a competitor mine set off explosives top extract gold.

In a press statement, Karebe Gold Mining Ltd regretted the incident

"Our staff were killed when a wall built to prevent the mine from flooding and illegal incursion was blasted  by illegal miners.Three members of our staff were injured and have been taken to hospital for treatment," the company said.

The company pointed fingers at Authorities over alleged ignorance to complaints of illegal miners operating in the area.

The statement further stated that a government official visited Karebe, and warned the illegal miners instructing them to lay down their tools.

Chemase/Chemelil Ward Member of County Assembly Martin Douglas Balala termed the incident as the government's failure in managing the tussle between Karebe and the other unlicensed miner.

Those who sustained injuries were rushed to different health facilities in Nandi and Kisumu Counties for medication and were later released.
