The third season of Red Bull half-court basketball tournament is to kick off with the involvement of the first qualifier scheduled on the 1st April at Aga khan grounds in Mombasa.
This is an annual tournament organized by the Red Bull company in partnership with the Kenya Basketball Federation that lays focus on hip-hop, culture and fashion, moreover, empowering the presence of women in sports.
This edition comes in a unique manner since it will include 4 major towns including Eldoret thus creating further growth on the 3 on 3 basketball within the country.
Eldoret is to host the qualifiers from the 15th of April having the Kisumu qualifiers set to play on the 29th while the Nairobians on the 20th of May.
Later on, all the qualified teams will face off at the national finals scheduled to take place at the USIU grounds on the 27th of May. Both the female and male champions will make it to the World Finals in Belgrade, Serbia, known as the origin of the 3 on 3 basketball.
The layout of the tournament is as the FIBA rules where the game is set for 10 minutes to a win of a maximum of 21 points.
The teams will face each other in a 1st round pool play in each qualifier, where the scoring team will be awarded a bonus point and qualify for the knockout stage.
Upon a tie, the team that scored the first 2 points is declared the winner. During the 2022 world finals, Kenya One and Team Nameless represented Kenya in the men’s category while the UON and Team Elite in the women’s category got a chance.
They had an incredible opportunity to be trained by the global celebrated shooting coach Lethal Shooter and Sebrian Dusan Bulut, the 3 on 3 basketball champion.
The Kenyan national team player George Daril Omondi, thanked the Red Bull for yet again sponsoring the tournament and its role in how it prepared him for the commonwealth games that happened in Birmingham last year in August.
His statement was seconded by the women’s national basketball team captain and current Team Baddies basketball player, Mellissa Akinyi by explaining how it exposes and creates experience for the basketball players.
The 2022 edition welcomed over 10,000 basketball players from 25 countries whereby Japan took the championship in the women’s category and Italy in the men’s category. The 2023 edition comes even bigger with the participation of a total of 47 countries.
