Kanu boss Gideon Moi has landed a new role with Commonwealth at a time when the party is struggling to stay afloat. The former Baringo senator takes up the new role three months after withdrawing his East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) membership bid.
Moi is part of a five Commonwealth observer group that has been deployed in Antigua and Barbuda in the West Indies to observe the pre-election preparations ahead of the country’s general elections on January 18th 2023.
His party Kanu has been facing challenges recently with the Embattled Kanu Secretary General Nick Salat ditching the Azimio coalition for President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza during the head of state visit in Kericho on Sunday, January 15th 2023.
The former Bomet East Member of Parliament however failed to clarify whether by announcing he accepted Ruto’s win he had abandoned the Kanu party.
According to a statement by H.E. Danny Faure former President of Seychelles and chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group, they will also be required to monitor voting, counting and results processes at polling stations.
“The task we have been given is one we take seriously and will undertake solemnly in compliance with international standards for the conduct of international observers.” H.E. Danny Faure, former President of Seychelles.
The group will submit an interim statement of their observations to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will forward it to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the country’s Electoral Commission, the leadership of political parties taking part in the elections and all Commonwealth governments.
