The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Tana River chief finance officer Mariam Abdalla Bunu in possession of Ksh2.7 million at Malindi Airport en route to Nairobi.
The interception occurred after officers from the Anti-Corruption Commission received an intelligence report from its coastal regional office that Mariam Bunu had been intercepted at the airport with some Ksh.6 M in cash that she could not account for.
However, after conducting a further probe, it was discovered that Bunu was in possession of undeclared cash amounting to Ksh.2.7 million.
EACC suspects that the money Bunu could not explain was corruptly obtained from the Tana River County Government.
Bunu was processed and later released on a cash bail of Ksh. 100,000 pending further investigations.
An investigation against Bunu for possible embezzlement of public funds, abuse of office and/or dealing with suspect property is currently underway.
