Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru has raised allegations of vote rigging as the counting continues for the 2022 gubernatorial race in Kirinyaga County.
Waiguru claims that two ballot boxes were brought into Kianyaga counting station as voting was underway, suspecting that they belonged to her main opponent and independent candidate Wangui Ngirici.
“Rigging in broad daylight??? – Two ballot boxes with governors’ ballots enter Kianyaga through the back door in broad daylight! They MUST be removed and tallying MUST stop!” She posted on her official Facebook account.
The governor is seeking to defend her seat for the second term under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Her main opponent, Wangui Ngirici, is an independent candidate who served as the second Women Representative of Kirinyaga County.
In November 2021, after weeks of speculations, Ngirici ditched Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party to vie for the Kirinyaga governor’s seat as an independent candidate.
“In 2022, I will not stand with any political party. I will seek to be elected as a governor as an individual and I’m confident that I will sail through,” Ngirici said.
Ngirici accused UDA officials of favoring her opponent Governor Anne Waiguru and expressed fears that she might be rigged out in the party’s primaries if she remains in UDA.
On Tuesday 9, Ngirici expressed her confidence in the electoral process.
Speaking at the Kaitheri Polytechnic polling station, in Kerugoya shortly after voting, the independent candidate urged her supporters to turn out in large numbers to vote and realize change.
She described the exercise as transformative and asked voters to exercise their civic duty wisely.
