Former Governor of Nairobi Mike Sonko has been acquitted in a twenty million Kenyan shillings corruption case. According to the anti-corruption Chief, magistrate Douglas Ogoti, the charges could not be proven. The former Governor was charged with a conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption namely embezzlement of public funds amounting to Sh24 million from the County Government of Nairobi. Even though nineteen witnesses had testified, the prosecution closed its case.
The defense through lawyer Assa Nyakundi submitted that there was no case to answer in which the Court ruled in their favor and said the charges were defective. Sonko was also facing more than 30 charges of money laundering, receiving bribes and conflict of interest which contributed to him being impeached as the Governor of Nairobi County.
He was first arraigned in Court on December 2019. The arraignment was followed by a weekend in jail after a dramatic arrest in Voi. Noordin Haji Director of Public Prosecutions accused Sonko of squandering Sh357 million from City Hall. He later argued that his arrest was politically motivated and that he was a law-abiding citizen.
Furthermore, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji will move to the High Court to challenge the verdict that Chief, magistrate Douglas Ogoti approved on the former Governor of Nairobi Mike Sonko.
