Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja pays a surprise visit to traders in Gikomba market on Thursday, December 29, just days after a huge inferno razed stalls and destroyed business premises.
The governor delivered support worth 2.4 million as well as 200k to the family of Alfred Mugo Wahome who died in the recent fire incident.
Among the donated material were iron sheets which Governor Sakaja stated would help to reinstate business premises for the affected trader.
"With Gikomba traders earlier today when I delivered support worth 2.4m as well as 200k to the family of Alfred Mugo Wahome who unfortunately succumbed after an inferno at Gikomba," Sakaja tweeted.
Speaking in Gikomba market, Governor Sakaja promised the traders that the frequent inferno will be a thing of the past, as the government is working on processing public title deeds for the market.
"Updated them on the progress we’ve made on the fire station whose construction will commence soon as well as on the processing of the public title deed for Gikomba which we’re expediting with the NLC. This will discourage opportunistic arsonists," he added.
According to him, this would help discourage what he termed as "opportunistic arsonists" who are alleged to frequent fire incidents.
"This will discourage opportunistic arsonists. Poleni sana; this will be a thing of the past. Joined by Starehe MP Hon Mwago and the area MCA “Mrefu”. Let’s Make Nairobi Work," he stated.
Earlier on this day, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sent a donation of Ksh1 million through former Starehe MP Charles Njagua to the victims who suffered losses after Wednesday's inferno.
