Despite significant obstacles, rural secondary schools performed exceptionally well in national examinations in Kisii County. Even while schools struggled with infrastructure and site restrictions for development, Masaba South Church Of God High School has established itself as an academic powerhouse in the KCSE for many years now.
The school principal Dr George Ogochi noted that broken facilities in the school need urgent repair in order to decongest single classrooms with 70 children and the girls using dormitories with semi-structures. The government's 100% primary to secondary transition, which had resulted in a severe teacher shortage, was another challenge for the institution.
“We have a challenge in infrastructure where the few resources and facilities we have been stretched beyond capacity, currently we have classes that accommodate over 70 students as pressure resulted from the admission of form ones and we have a problem with dormitories especially the girls because they still sleep in semi-permanent structures,”said Ogochi
Ogochi further revealed that 45 teachers who had been hired by the Board of Management to fill the gap left by the departure of 38 of the anticipated 83 teachers.
“I want to thank the ministry our major challenge is staffing, we have 37 TSC teachers and but the school has employees 45 BOM teachers to take care of pressure in the institution” he added
However, the school recorded a mean score of 9.2 in the form four national exams last year, with girls performing on the same level with males by recording mean grades of 9.26 and 9.30, respectively.
"In terms of performance, boys and girls performed almost the same the mean score of school was 9.28 boys mean score was 9.31 while girls 9.261 we the competition as you see is very healthy and we look forward to shine the coming year”
In addition, the school and the neighborhood have also cultivated friendly ties which have helped in the free distribution of water from its three boreholes
“The school on its part has also offered to help the community with water there are three water boreholes donated by board where members of the community are given some hours to fetch without charge and this has created a good relationship with them” the principal added.
Principal Ogochi lauded the Education ministry for allocating funds that have helped the institution deal with its primary issues.
