There is confusion at Roots Party after its party leader George Wajackoyah appeared to support Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga while his running mate Justina Wamae threatens to go for a contrary option.
On Wednesday, rumors that Roots Party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah had endorsed Azimio flagbearer Raila Odinga as the fifth president of Kenya emerged and spread across the internet.
The rumors were supported by a small video clip that showed Wajackoyah recognizing Raila as the liberator of Kenya.
The video also showed the Roots Party leader giving credit to Raila for inspiring his journey to become a liberator.
“I am here to join the battle of liberators in this country and the person who makes me stand here is none other than Raila Amollo Odinga,” Wajackoyah says in the undated video that has since gone viral.
However, the Presidential candidate has now come out to deny the reports, saying he has neither endorsed Raila Odinga’s presidential bid nor intends to do so.
“We would like to categorically state that we have a presidential candidate who is on the Ballot and will win this Election. We have not and will not endorse any other candidate. We would like to distance ourselves from those claims and assure our supporters that victory is coming,” their statement read in part.
The statement by Party Spokesperson Wilson Muirani explains that in the entertainment joint, Wajackoyah addressed his supporters and accorded the other three presidential candidates some level of respect.
However, later that day, Luchiri’s running mate Justina Wamae came out and confirmed the claim that Wajackoyah favors the Azimio’s Raila Odinga.
Justina said that it is true that their flagbearer candidate supports Raila and made it clear that she was not asked for any advice regarding the move.
“It is true there are allegations that my principal and party leader is supporting Azimio. We as the Roots party have not discussed it, we have not agreed and neither have I been consulted on the same,” she said.
Justina said as of Wednesday, they were busy with their campaigns and selling party policies to the people.
The new events seem to have created spark uncertainties in the party that is participating in the presidential election for the first time.
