In his assessment of the election year on Friday, January 6, The Orange Democratic leader  Raila Odinga, referred to 2022 as the "year of the devil."

In his speech to a delegates conference in Mombasa, The veteran opposition leader claimed that the difficulties he encountered in pursuing his political aspirations made it a year to forget.

Raila said that the altercations seen at the tallying Centre on August 15 were the fault of Wafula Chebukati, the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). This saw him lose his trial for the fifth time to cling to the country’s top most coveted seat.

"We are prepared to see justice prevail since the only wicked things that happened were conspired by Wafula Chebukati,” he said.

"Because what he did was a crime against humanity, he should be brought to the Hague" Raila added.

In response to pressure from those awaiting his retirement, the former Prime minister further added that he would retire at his own discretion and did not need anyone to tell him when to depart from the political scene.

"I don't need anyone to give me directions; I know how to get to Bondo," Raila Odinga stated.

In addition, ahead of the elections in 2027, Odinga reaffirmed his earlier demand for sweeping changes at the electoral commission.

He asserted that failure to address the issues in the commission would mean that Kenya's electoral system's drawbacks will keep undermining democracy.
