Azimio leader Raila Odinga has slammed Chief Justice Martha Komme for meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi to discuss corruption in the Judiciary.
Odinga has termed the move as irresponsible and one that could interfere with Judiciary independence.
Speaking in Lamu County, Odinga said the Judiciary is being held captive by the Executive, and that shouldn’t be the case.
“I have read that the CJ has gone for a meeting with the President in the State House. If there is supposed to be a dialogue, it should be held in a neutral place. This means that the judiciary itself is being compromised and held hostage by the Executive,” said Odinga.
Monday morning President William Ruto held a meeting with Chief Justice Martha Koome, this coming after several attacks on the Judiciary from the Executive forcing the CJ to call for a dialogue to iron out the differences. an invitation that President William Ruto welcomed last week.
According to President William Ruto, the Government is actively monitoring and committed to addressing corruption within the judiciary, which he describes as a monster derailing Kenya’s growth.
“I am ready for the conversation on how we are going to deal with vested interests, with incompetence, and especially corruption, whether it is in the Judiciary, Legislature, or the Executive because it is delaying, derailing, and sabotaging the progress and potential of Kenya,” Ruto said.
The CJ as well has also shown a commitment to addressing the differences between the Judiciary and Executive despite uproar from both the political and legal sectors with the opposition chief and LSK opposed to the idea of a meeting with the Executive and the Judiciary arguing that it will make Kenyans lose confidence with the Judiciary.
Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula, Deputy CJ Philomena Mwilu, and Attorney General Justin Muturi have also joined the meeting.
