President William Ruto had invited President João Lourenço of Angola as the chief guest at the 60th Mashujaa Day celebration held in the Kericho Green Stadium.
President João Lourenço, however, never attended the celebrations as planned due to unforeseeable reasons as his minister explained in a speech at the stadium.
"On behalf of the President, I would first like to convey his apologies. He would have loved to be here but for unforeseen reasons, he could not make it to Kericho but he sent you a warm greeting," Angolan Foreign Minister Tete António explained.
Lourenço arrived in the country on Thursday evening with his wife, Ana Dias Lourenço.
He was received by the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
In a communication made by Prime CS Mudavadi, the Angolan president was to end his visit on the 20th of October 2023 after having mutual discussions with the government of Kenya.
This is the first case, in recent history, that a state chief guest has failed to attend a function even though he was here a day before.
It is yet to be confirmed whether the president will extend his visit by a day or not.
