On Saturday, Yoweri Museveni, the president of Uganda, relaxed all travel restrictions connected to Ebola, claiming that the East African nation has achieved success in containing the deadly epidemic. Museveni lifted restrictions on the disease's epicenters in the Mubende area (66 cases, 29 fatalities), and the Kassanda region (49 cases, 21 fatalities).

In a statement, Museveni stated that "now, there is no transmission, no contact under follow-up, no patients in the isolation facilities, and we are going well with the count down." Initially identified as the Sudan strain of the illness, which kills 40%–60% of people infected and for which there is no proven vaccine, the outbreak was first officially confirmed by officials in September.

The Kampala administration closed places of worship and entertainment in October and enforced travel restrictions and an overnight curfew. Uganda said earlier this month that its final Ebola patient had been released. Ebola spreads through contact with the bodily fluids of those who are sick and causes vomiting, bleeding, and diarrhea. In some cases, the virus might persist in the body fluids, central nervous system, and eyes of survivors and reactivate years later.
