Controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie linked to the Shakahola massacre has been sentenced to one year in prison after being charged with operating and producing films illegally without a license.

The accused on his side said that he had no idea that in order to operate, produce and air films one has to have a registered license with the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB).

This comes a few months after The Good News International Ministries’ congregants claimed that the preacher had forced them to go without food.

Magistrate Olga Onalo subsequently added another six months in prison for airing his films in public on Times TV without a license.

“For the offences Paul Mackenzie has committed he is supposed to face a jail term not exceeding one year or a fine that does not exceed Ksh. 100,000.” the magistrate ruled.

The probation officer handling the case however had pleaded with the court not to grant the accused the right to post a fine.

A probation report by Nick Makuu stated that Mackenzie had been earlier accused of similar charges relating to his church and its operations like running an educational institution that is unregistered.

The accused has been taken to custody in the Shimo la Tewa prison where he is expected to be until he and his lawyers decide to appeal to the court in 14 days.
