Azimio Party leader, Raila Odinga arrived at the Shakahola operation zone on Friday 5th May 2023 to witness the exhumation process but was denied access by security officers.

The commander in charge of the operation process asked the former prime minister together with leaders accompanying him to get a permit from the Inspector General of police before accessing the scene.

The commander told Raila Odinga the area was declared a crime scene by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior Kithure Kindiki so as to ease the investigation and allowing him in could disrupt the investigations that are taking place.

Raila Odinga was accompanied by the MP of Malindi, Amina Mnyazi and the Woman Representative of Kilifi County, Gertrude Mbeyu.

The Senior Assistant Inspector General of police, Peter Ndung’u said that the political leaders could not be given access to the Shakahola forest because the investigation taking place there is very frail.

The exhumation of the mass graves was halted due to heavy rains that were experienced in the region but resumed on 5th May 2023.
