France needed penalties to beat Portugal yesterday in one of the two quarter finals played yesterday. The game was goalless throughout the 90 and in extra time and needed penalties to get a winner.
Both teams came into the match with difficulty in finding the back of the net. The game had few clear cut chances for both teams. Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo were both silent on the night. Bruno Fernandes had a clear cut chance in the 60th minute but Maignan got down well
Dembele came from the bench and tried to create a few chances but was unlucky. Ngolo Kante also had two chances to put the game to bed inside 90 minutes but his shots were saved by Diogo Dalot.
In extra time, both teams were happy to sit back. Mbappe was subbed before the beginning of extra time for Bradley Barcola who had a chance late in the second half of extra time when he danced his way into the Portugal penalty area but his shot was off target.
Dembele, Fofana, Kounde, Barcola and Theo Hernandez all scored their spot kicks for France while Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva and Nuno Mendes scored for Portugal.
Substitute Joao Felix was unlucky to be the villain of the night after his penalty hit the bottom of the post. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa whose heroics enabled Portugal to be in the quarters, saved none yesterday.
France finally got their revenge on Portugal who beat them in the Euro 2016 Final and will play Spain who advanced in the earlier match on Tuesday in the Semis
