Premier League's top performers On a day of unexpected third-round exits, Newcastle lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, the defending champions Liverpool drew with Wolves through luck, and Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest lost. The Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who co-own Wrexham, led the social media celebrations after their non-league team's unexpected 4-3 triumph against second-tier Coventry on another exciting day of FA Cup action.

But on Saturday, Wednesday, who are currently second in League One, stole the show with an amazing 2-1 victory over a third-placed Newcastle club at Hillsborough. Eddie Howe's team had gone 15 games without a loss, but after Josh Windass's double surprised the Magpies, Wednesday has now gone 10 games without a loss.

When Windass, who appeared to be on the wrong side of the field, deflected Dennis Adeniran's close-range pass, Wednesday took the lead. After being passed through by Michael Smith, Windass calmly converted his second goal 13 minutes later. Bruno Guimaraes' close-range goal in the 68th minute helped Newcastle cut the gap, but Chris Wood wasted a great chance to tie the score by shooting over from 10 yards away.

"It was a disappointing result for us. We are aware that we don't have the deepest squad of any team in the Premier League," Howe said. At Anfield, a difficult week for Liverpool that started with a Premier League loss at Brentford, concluded with a fortuitous 2-2 draw against Wolves. Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker was guilty of a woeful error when his pass was intercepted by Goncalo Guedes, who slotted Wolves' 26th minute opener.

Darwin Nunez equalized just before halftime with a brilliant volley that he cushioned past Matija Sarkic, and Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 52nd minute with a skillful finish. The Reds, who gave Dutch forward Cody Gakpo his professional debut following his transfer from PSV Eindhoven, were, given a setback in the 57th minute by Hwang Hee-composed chan's effort. Even worse could have happened for Liverpool because, in the last seconds, Toti's goal was ruled to be offside, allowing the Reds to win and force a replay.

"The first goal should not happen, but we all know how often Ali saves our backsides," Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said. "I'm not sure about their disallowed goal. We have one picture where it may look offside, but I can understand why they are angry about it."

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was furious with the decision and also claimed Salah's strike should have been ruled out.

"We have seen it, the offside doesn't exist, I'm sorry. It's impossible. The decision is wrong," he said. "Then Mohamed Salah was offside before Toti touched the ball, so he got an advantage."

For the National League team Wrexham, goals from Sam Dalby, Elliot Lee, Thomas O'Connor, and Paul Mullin propelled them to a 4-1 victory over Coventry. Wrexham advanced to the fourth round for the first time since 2000 despite a late comeback from 10-man Coventry, which prompted a jubilant and profane Instagram post from Reynolds.

"It's a great chapter in the story of Wrexham since the new owners have come in and I'm sure they will be overjoyed with what they've seen today," Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said.

Following his team's victory over Southampton in the previous week, which propelled them out of the Premier League relegation zone, Forest manager Steve Cooper picked a totally different starting lineup for the game at Blackpool. At Bloomfield Road, the Championship team defeated the side in the Premier League 4-1 thanks to goals from Marvin Ekpiteta, Ian Poveda, CJ Hamilton, and Jerry Yates.

Burnley, currently in first place in the Championship, are on track to defeat Bournemouth 4-2 thanks to two goals each from Anass Zaroury and Manuel Benson. Harry Kane scored in the 50th minute of Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Portsmouth, moving closer to breaking the club's all-time goalscoring record.

Kane has 265 goals for Spurs, one fewer than Jimmy Greaves, the club's all-time leading scorer, who had scored four goals in his last four games after missing the penalty against France that caused England to be eliminated from the World Cup.
