In a statement to police on December 22, Baby Sagini's grandmother accused her daughter-in-law of hurting the three-year-old. The grandmother claimed that Sagini's cousin and her daughter-in-law planned to have the three-year-old killed in her statement to detectives headquartered in Kisii. The fight over a piece of ancestral land that Baby Sagini was supposed to inherit was at the center of the incident.
She said in her statement that the two primary suspects were intent to injure the infant because they did not want the three-year-old child, who was a stepson in the family, to inherit family land. The grandmother explained that despite being advised against it, the two came up with the plan and were determined to kill the baby. Just hours after Sagini's Thursday arrest, her grandma made the admission.
The three-year-old was brought to the corn plantation by his aunt, who was afterwards joined by her son, the police said. Even as they stepped up their investigation into the tragedy, the police continued to have a suspicion that the gouging of the eyes occurred at the corn plantation. However, neither did the police make the suspects' remarks public nor did they say if the grandmother would be called as a state witness.
The trio, who appeared in court on December 22, were instructed to enter a plea on Friday, December 23, as Baby Sagini was not represented by counsel. If both teams were present in court, the prosecutor's office would prefer to file charges against the two, Hilary Kaino, the prosecutor, said the court. On the other side, Baby Sagini, his mother, and his sister were given protective custody in an unidentified part of Nairobi County.
