New Records Set in the Inter- County Golf Series

The first ever Hole-In-One in the Inter-County Golf Series was registered during the first round of 2023 held at Thika Greens Golf Resort on May 20th. Ash Makrani inscribed his name on the historic wall after acing hole number 15. As a golf tradition, Makrani rang the bell and bought drinks for the over 150 golfers at the event. The Mombasa Golf Club player was also declared the Rware winner after posting 38 Stableford points.

“I had the best four-ball in this tournament which made me enjoy my game leading to such a historic day I will never forget”, said Makrani.

Machakos county emerged victorious in the tournament with 366 points, followed by Rware who posted 360 points. Kiambu completed the podium with 343 points ahead of Metumi(341), Abai(340), Amerucans (300), Happy Valley(295), and Embu(249).

“The aim of this competition is to foster unity among all the 47 counties as we promote the game of golf in all corners of this country. We also use this event to raise awareness about environmental conservation and investment”, Captain Patrick Karanja spoke after the prize-giving ceremony.

Winners in each county represented are Eng. John Ngugi(41 points, Metumi), Ash Makrani (38 points, Rware), Andrew Muriuki(39 points, Abai), Charles Kithuku(40 points, Machakos), Maina Gaiti (38 points, Happy Valley), David Njiru(40 points, Embu), Jediel Muriungi (39 points, Amerucans), and Veronica Wanjiku (39 points, Kabeteshire).

Dr. Fred Mugambi, playing off handicap 22, clinched the Overall prize with 42 points, beating Moses Cheboi (Man Winner) and David Ndiang’ui (Member winner) on count-back. With 39 points, Veronica Wanjiku(handicap 26) lifted the Ladys’ top crown.

“The course was in good condition which favoured my style of play. The weather was also perfect especially for early tee-off players like me. Not forgetting the best four-ball of Tony Kwalanda, David Ndiang’ui and Sam Mburu”, said Dr. Mugambi.

The Longest Drive reward for the men went to Ndegwa Thuku, while Nancy Ndung’u claimed the lady’s award. Chris Kinuthia got the men’s Nearest to the pin title, while Veronica Wanjiku took the lady’s prize. Kibanya Gitimu (23 points) and Martin Mutuma (21 points) were the 1st nine and 2nd nine winners respectively, while the Best Effort award went to Willie Maina(17 points).

“This competition has grown in leaps and bounds and is definitely the next big thing in Kenya. It is not just about playing golf, but also creating opportunities for each other financially, economically, and socially”, said Hon. Charles Kibiru – C.E.O., Thika Greens Golf Resort.

The second round of the Inter County Golf Series will take place in June 3 at Thika Greens Golf Resort, with participating teams comprising of Mulembe, Sweet Banana, Sunset, NaxVegas, and Great Rift.
