The National Police Service intends to recruit five thousand police officers this year.
According to the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome, the process should begin as soon as possible in order to fill the vacant positions in the service.
However, he found himself at the receiving end to explain whether the process should have started in April this year as the treasurer maintained that the process should take effect starting April next year due to budget constraints.
The IG spoke this while appearing before the parliamentary committee on admission and internal affairs in Athi River Machakos County for the National Police budget estimates of revenue and expenditure for the financial year of 2023/24.
During the plenary session, the MPs present wanted to know if there's money allocated for the recruitment and if it’s adequate, in its response the treasury revealed that money that is currently available for the process is five hundred million only.
The MPs have also reached out to the office of the IG to digitize the OB and audit of all the police land to know how many have title deeds and how many do not.
The National Police in the FY 2023/24 had been allocated Kshs 106.85b broken down as 105.11b for recurrent and 32.82b for development leaving a shortfall of 51b and 31.08b for both recurrent and development.
