Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei has deemed planned Azimio’s Mass Action illegal; says the alliance did not meet the legal threshold for a legitimate procession.

On Sunday, March 19, 2023, Bungei stated to the press that the protest would not be permitted because the coalition had not promptly informed the authorities of the planned mass protest.

“You shall notify the regulatory officer of such intent, at least three days but not more than 14 days before the proposed date of such a meeting or procession,” Adamson Bungei said.

According to reports, Azimio La Umoja Coalition and Nairobi Business Community both informed the authorities in writing of their plans to protest on Monday. Adamson Bungei, however, has stated that none of them has been approved because of concerns for public safety.

"We are in receipt of two requests that came late yesterday and today in the morning. One was from Azimio la Umoja One Kenya and another from the Nairobi business community. But for public safety none has been granted," said Bungei.

He continued by saying that if the law was upheld, no property would be destroyed because safeguards had been put in place to protect Kenyans and their businesses.

Moreover, the Police Chief has sent a stern warning to anyone who will breach the security measures: “Therefore, any person that will participate in the planned demonstration is therefore notified to do so peacefully as guided by the constitution of Kenya.”

Kenyans have been assured by Bungei that both their personal safety and the security of their businesses are fully guaranteed.

“We want to assure Kenyans that we are ready to secure their lives and property,” he added.
