In Marsabit County, according to nominated MP Naomi Waqo, issuing new applicants national IDs is fraught with discrimination.

The University's requirement that students identify themselves by submitting identity cards whenever necessary is rendered meaningless by the problem with students' ID cards.

The member claimed that those seeking identity cards to apply for funding from the Higher Education Loans Board or for university or college education are the hardest affected.

Waqo said that new applicants are turned down for cards based on their ethnicity and requested a response from the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Affairs of the National Assembly.

“Travelling becomes a challenge due to lack of an identity card, which is a mandatory pass at various police checkpoints along Moyale-Isiolo Road,” she said.

The MP requests an explanation from the Interior Ministry on the steps taken to guarantee that new applicants receive identity cards as soon as possible.
