Former nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has for the first time broken his silence on his removal from office as governor by the then government as he claims. The former flamboyant governor reiterated that his zeal to dismantle cartel syphoning millions of money in the county orchestrated his impeachment.
Sonko lamented that he crossed severally with the then deep state on several issues affecting Nairobians which never resonated well with the then administration.
“I severally refused to allow illegal demolitions in slums without compensation of the victims, which angered the former interior cabinet secretary, Fred Matiang’i and his ps Karanja Kibicho. Nicknaming me big-headed to the government of the day ’’ Sonko said
The former governor further confirmed that when he was elected in 2017, he inherited a semi-digitalised cash collection system which only collected monies from 14 streams out of the intended 136 streams. Sonko says this left an avenue for cartels within city hall and the then-national government to loot. However, his intention to digitise the whole system and ban cash collection manually was met with opposition from cartels within city-hall.
“The cashier at the cash office in city hall used to collect millions each day manually and share it among themselves before banking the reminder. I digitised the whole system and the move angered the cartel that used to syphon funds each day.’’ sonko explained.
The governor who has been out of office for 5 years now after being impeached reiterated that he was impeached to pave the way to the said deep state that he denied access to county revenue share when he fully digitised the revenue collection system.
“I became an enemy of many, my move angered them, I denied them access to revenue collected daily, they orchestrated the move to impeach me illegally ’ Sonko protested
The former city boss however denied that he failed to deliver as expected, saying his record speaks loudly. Among many, projects he accomplished including Dandora stadium,5 fire stations and 5 modern markets some still need to be officially opened.
“I did Dandora stadium, but they refused to acknowledge that, i did several markets some have not yet been officially opened. When I joined there was only one fire station within the city, I constructed 4 more and I intended to construct 17, each in every sub-county. ’ Sonko explained.
Speaking during the Obinna show, Sonko insisted the then administration ignored commissioning the projects to blemish him as a failure as he was already impeached. However, Sonko who has been in and out of court and is hopeful that he will be cleared soon from the pending cases surrounding his impeachment.
