Mike Mbuvi Sonko has lost his Facebook page which had over 2.5 million subscribers over the remarks he made concerning the LGBTQ community.
The flamboyant politician remains adamant that he would rather lose his Facebook account than offer members of the LGBTQ an apology for his remarks. He says he will channel his energy toward building his Twitter account which already has 2.3 million followers.
While expressing his dissatisfaction with the team from Facebook administrators, the former Nairobi governor says members of the LGBTQ community who were not happy with his opposition to their way of life made several complaints to the Facebook administrators forcing them to disable his Facebook account.
“Hawa mashonga wa LGBTQ wako na nguvu. Wamecomplain to FB mpaka my page of 2.5 followers ikakuwa disabled till I apologize to them then appeal to FB. I can’t and will not apologize to them” Mike Sonko wrote on his Twitter account.
The flamboyant politician remains adamant that he would rather lose his Facebook account than offer members of the LGBTQ an apology for his remarks. He says he will channel his energy toward building his Twitter account which already has 2.3 million followers.
“Hapa Twitter muko 2,300,000 followers and still growing like a bushfire. ALLUTA CONTINUA,” He added
In defending their decision to suspend Sonko’s Facebook account, Facebook administrators from meta a company that runs the social site said they at all times strive to create a safe environment where people can be their authentic selves and share their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives including inclusivity for LGBTQ communities.
In this respect, meta listed several house rules that they deem were violated by mike Sonko in his views about LBGTQ published on his now-suspended Facebook page
Facebook dictates that every page holder be nice to one another as a general rule to ensure everyone is respected and feels accepted.
Mike Sonko’s comments were deemed disrespectful and insensitive to members of the LGBTQ community hence the suspension
Additionally, Facebook administrators maintain they are actively monitoring content both on individual and public accounts to ensure such content is relevant and comments made hitherto remain on topic. Any off-topic conversation may be removed. Mr Sonko’s comments on LGBTQ elicited reactionary comments that were judged offensive hence the suspension of his account.
Sonko also violated the Facebook rule on respect for others' individuality and sexual orientation. The page says it remains steadfast in amplifying LGBTQ voices to ensure everyone feels safe to be who they are.
The LGBTQ topic remains a sensitive discussion in the country. The supreme court ruling which recognized the LGBTQ community’s right to form an association has received widespread condemnation from the larger Kenyan population who are still not ready for LGBTQ ways of life.
It's still not clear whether Mike Sonko will reconsider his stand and offer an apology to salvage his Facebook account which he has built over the years. For now, he remains firm, no apology will come from his mouth.
