A Nairobi man accused of stealing his girlfriend’s shoes and laptop then gifting them to his other girlfriend has denied the theft charges levelled against him. Ryan Lusalishi was arraigned before the Makadara Law Courts on Thursday, where the court heard that he stole a laptop worth Ksh.25,000, a bag, and a pair of shoes from Elizabeth Okumu between November 7 and 8 this year in Nairobi. According to Ms Okumu who testified before Principal Magistrate Gathogo Sogomo, she returned to her house from work to find some items rearranged.
She claimed that upon closer examination she discovered that the laptop, a pair of shoes, a backpack, and an ATM card were all missing. Okumu said in court that she had gotten an SMS on the same day informing her of a failed transaction due to a faulty PIN and believed that someone was attempting to use her lost ATM card. When her attempts to find out whether her house had been entered by a stranger by asking her neighbors and the caretaker for information proved fruitless, she came to the conclusion that it was her lover and reported the incident to the police. Lusalishi's other girlfriend, who is also a witness in the case, told police during investigations that he returned home with the items and gifted her the shoes which were not her size.
After his arrest, the shoes and bag were discovered in his home. Due to her possession of the bag and shoes, Lusalishi is also charged with transferring what she believes to be stolen property in violation of Section 323 of the Penal Code. He was freed on a surety bond for Ksh. 50,000 and an alternative Ksh. 30,000 cash bail. The subject will be discussed on January 31 of the following year before the hearing on May 22.
