It has been described as the game of the mind and was inculcated into his mind at a young age. Kyle Kuka is determined to be the King of the chess board making one move at a time.

At just 13 years old, Kyle possesses a keen intellect and a passion for the ancient game that surpasses his age. However, his love for chess wasn’t a boy on an adventure to find a sport, it was more of therapy to help him improve his concentration.

His Mom Vivian Opiyo says Kyle had a problem with concentration and she needed to find something to help him improve on that. So she introduced Kyle to chess which is a game that needs someone to pay close attention for it to act as therapy and improve his concentration abilities.

Where is all begun

The game was part of the curriculum at the school that Kyle goes to which is St Bakhita school.

Kyle first learned the intricate rules of the game from St Bakhita Chess Club, something that started as therapy swept him off his feet and he was hooked, spending countless hours studying Opening strategies, middlegame strategies, analyzing endgames, and perfecting his tactics. As Kyle's skills on the chessboard grew, so did his ambitions.

He has represented the country on the international stage and He dreams of continuing with the same, competing against the best players from around the world. One memorable competition that the 13-year-old remembers vividly and one that put him on the map as the future of the board game was when he participated in the prestigious 14th Capablanca Cup Chess Championship held at Goan Gymkhana Nairobi. It was a momentous occasion for Kyle, an opportunity to test his abilities against some of the strongest players in the region. With nerves of steel and a mind sharp as a tack, Kyle navigated his way through the tournament, employing cunning strategies and bold sacrifices to outwit his opponents.

Despite facing stiff competition, he emerged victorious, clinching a well-deserved bronze medal and earning the respect of his peers.

Kyle’s Board of Success

Fuelled by his success at the Gymkhana, he set his sights on another challenge—the Chess for Minds and Stress Relief Chess Tournament held at Sportsview Hotel. This tournament was not just about winning; it was about promoting mental well-being and relaxation through the game of chess—a cause close to Kyle's heart. Once again, Kyle showcased his exceptional talent on the chessboard, dazzling spectators with his creativity and precision. His performance was nothing short of stellar, and he was awarded the Best Junior Award, cementing his reputation as one of the brightest young stars in Kenyan chess.

The ultimate Goal

Kyle remains focused on his ultimate goal which is to qualify for the Kenya National Senior Chess Team before his 16th birthday. It is a daunting task, but one that Kyle is approaching with unwavering determination and dedication.

Kyle is a member of the Mavens Chess Club, where he is honing his skills alongside other talented players, his rapid improvement has not gone unnoticed. His FIDE chess rating soared from 1274 in November to an impressive 1546 in February, a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence.

With each passing day, Kyle's dream draws closer to reality. With the support of his family, his coaches, and his fellow chess enthusiasts, Kyle Kuka is well on his way to making his mark on the world stage, one move at a time.
